Malt Shop One-Hit Wonders

A “one-hit wonder” refers to any person who achieves a great deal of success for a specific piece of work and is never able to replicate that level of popularity later in his or her career.  Novelists such as Margaret Mitchell and Emily Bronte, film directors such as Michael Cimino and Paul Brickman, and painters such as Grant Wood and Edvard Munch all fit neatly in this category. More commonly, however, the term “one-hit wonder” refers to recording artists who achieve fame with a single song and due to variety of circumstances, fail to come anywhere near that record’s level of success.  During this presentation we will have an opportunity to relive several such examples from the first decade of Rock & Roll including “The Book of Love” by the Monotones, “Earth Angel” by the Penguins, and “To Know Him Is to Love Him” by the Teddy Bears.
