Malt Shop Instrumentalists

Prior to the start of Rock n’ Roll, most of the music people were experiencing was composed with no lyrics.  Whether it was a Mozart symphony or Brahms piano concerto from the classical era, a Broadway overture, a Big Band number, or a film soundtrack from the last century, some of the greatest melodies ever written were created without words and have never ceased to lose their popularity.

Following in this tradition, a significant number of early Rock ‘n Roll musicians including Duane Eddy, Santo and Johnny, the Champs, the Ventures, and Dave Cortez were responsible for some of the best-selling recordings of the Malt Shop era.  During this presentation we will have a chance to listen to some of their compositions and examine how and why they had such universal appeal.
